"Good Morning, World!"

Tag: Life in New York City

REPORTED HERE

The Hawk West Desk Window 12:06pm

I emerged dressed for a party

from The A Train

@ 110th Street

@night

& was blocked on the stairs

by a young punk

making hand signals

asking Me if I knew

where to get The A Train

I said, “You know perfectly well

where to get The A Train –”

but by then the crowd

was gone

I was back on the platform

two other muggers

approached from either side

I was caught

they demanded My Wallet

which was in a shoulder bag

I said, “What if I don’t give It to you?”

the thug from the stairs

pulled out a switch blade

I dug out My Purse —

the guy to My Left

took off My World Trade Center Watch

given to Me by My Mother

the guy to My Right looked

@ My Mother’s Silver Bangles

but didn’t take Them

THE POCONOS

The Tomato-coloured Couch 7:13pm

On My only trip to The Poconos

I accompanied A Non-descript Man

to some friends of His —

A Husband and His Pregnant Wife —

I went swimming off a dock

in My royal blue bathing suit

& drove back to New York City

in the night with The Wife

and My Date in the back

and Me

in the front passenger seat

My Knee surreptitiously laid

against the gear shift

against The Husband’s fist

and sometimes open hand

INTERRUPTED COOKING

The Tomato-coloured Couch 6:11pm

I had to interrupt cooking supper

to write about laying out

four plastic Canadian fifties

for My Daughter’s allowance

allowing enough for a sports bra

to buy on a trip to Halifax

with Her Boyfriend

— $200.00 bucks flat out —

I was struck by the recollection

of a roll of American twenties

wadded into My Starving Palm

counted out in the bathroom

of a Japanese Piano Bar in New York:

— $200.00 bucks tootsie-rolled

into a promise to be taken

to Korea to do an art project

but delivered in a Waldorf  elevator

with the push

to accompany The Korean Minister of Defence

into His Room

where all I could do

was to declare

in plain English:

“There has been some mistake.”
