FOG HORN
by Joanna Gilman Hyde
The Hawk Portico 5:55pm
Another identifiable sound here
is the melodic fog horn
sounding now with no fog
in sight —
sounding every minute
at the 42nd second mark
of My Ladies Bulova Open Heart Watch
sounding, reverberating in the key of C or D
(according to Eliza)
for ten seconds at a stretch
but not drowning out the birds
Anything drowning out the birds does not deserve to be making noise π Usually.
But I wrote NOT drowning out the birds. There are other noises that drown me out of being outside, but luckily they’re only occasional and don’t last long — general neighbourhood noises and motor boats up in the town of Clark’s Harbour.
Oh, I know! It was just a response to that line, which I particularly liked. “Drowning out the birds” – a level of sound to be reached. Love it.
Thanks Natalie.
