AFTER TWELVE HOURS OF SLEEP

The Hawk Deck 9:00am

The Silver off The Water

crashes into My Eyes

loosely glinting on Its Southern Edge

I hear The Morning Birds

out on My Deck

with the screen open behind Me

hearing the water kettle on

for Our Second Cup

OLLY THE GULL

The Hawk Corner Room 7:07pm

Olly The Gull

came from His Nesting Grounds

on The South End of McNutt’s Island

stolen by Me

in My 13th Year —

raised on bread and milk

taken up to The Island House Rooftop

and told to fly

THE FAMILY OUTING

The Hawk Kitchen Outpost 1:22pm

Three birds landed in My Scraggly Apple:

two Starlings and one smaller greyish-brownish variety —

and dropped to the yard

into high grass needing cutting —

but there I saw through the grass

the smaller unknown open His Mouth

and The Starling nearest popped something

inside — I saw this

three times

before The Threesome flew off

and left Me

to tell My Husband

as He came home for lunch —

when My Husband was done

eating His Bagel

He looked out back and was able

to see a return of The Starlings

to the opposite section of Our Yard

whereupon The Youngster

almost hidden by grass

opened His Mouth again

and got fed some more

THE NEXT MORNING

The Hawk Deck 7:55am

Could there be a mate somewhere

to the little bird who died

last night?

Could that bird in The Scraggly Apple

who remained silent

as I watched Him or Her

be at a loss now

for its survival?

WHERE I HAVE THROWN THE WRECKAGE

The Hawk Deck 9:32pm

I just tossed a little dead bird

off from the bank

where the X-Miss Tree lies

— a capture of Cami —

Who is provided a bell

but which the little dead bird

couldn’t hear

in its sleep

PORTRAIT OF A LEAFLESS TREE

The Hawk Kitchen Outpost 6:29pm

Our Back Yard houses

one lichen-covered Scraggly Apple

looking like a swath of coral

showing off any bird

deciding to perch there

by the deck

and beyond the kitchen

sliding glass door

from which I gaze

out to Our One-tree Yard —

source of My Undying Affection

MEAGRE BREAKFAST

The Hawk Queen Bed 7:36pm

I watched a crow peck

the remaining shepherd’s pie

from last night’s supper

INTERLUDE

The Tomato-coloured Couch 4:38pm

A Brown-headed Cow Bird

has taken a fancy to My Car Mirror —

with binoculars from My Upstairs Window

I watched Him preen

in front of His Reflection

for minutes elapsing

until He crapped

and a cat

scared Him away

LEONA LINK’S BIRTHDAY

The Hawk Kitchen Outpost 2:15pm

I saw a black-headed Grackle

atop My Scraggly Apple

as I put together

a shepherd’s pie

and stopped

to watch

His Darkness

against The Sky

ELIZA’S WINDOW

The Hawk Kitchen Outpost 8:28am

I wake to the sounds

of the ocean —

a distant Willet

and local gulls

It might be six

in the morning

but I am afforded

the luxury

of lying in bed

until 7:30
