Joanna Gilman Hyde

"Good Morning, World!"

WILD ISLAND

The Tomato-coloured Couch 3:25pm

I had a suburban upbringing

counteracted by summers

on a Wild Island

off the coast of Nova Scotia

I was a Nyack Public School Student

with paper route and good grades —

on The Island

I wore no clothes

and turned My White Bread Ass

Honey Brown

ANXIETY UNEXPLAINED

The Tomato-coloured Couch 2:55pm

I cannot lay My Self down

upon My Tomato-coloured Couch

I cannot —

I must sit here & write

& let the Ativan do its trick

I will drink My Tea

& not think of the years

of wasting away in beds

on couches, brown, green

& white

MORNING WINDOW

The Hawk Outpost 9:10am

I Blink In All The Brilliant Light

Until My Lashes Gleam

Iridescence Calls Me In

Converging All I’ve Seen

NOTE TO MY READERS

Thank you for “liking”

MUNCHING ON EXISTENCE

This is to inform you

that I have since

made a single word change

in the poem

to clarify my point

Your friend,

Joanna

MUNCHING ON EXISTENCE*

The Tomato-coloured Couch 5:53pm

I am salivating

to Save The World

to spoon It out

from under Itself

feed Me Our New Existence

which is ancient

Yes — I could eat It —

consume Its micro-biotic

Humanoids

Who keep questioning God

when They don’t have to

& spit Them out

afresh

*Robert A. Raines & Robert Gliner

IT’S HERE

The Tomato-coloured Couch 5:00pm

I speak with a forked tongue

out of both sides

of My Mouth

polished teeth gleaming

I am The Devil

to Whom I give no credence

I am set to announce

The Second Coming

not of Christ

but of Global

Darkness

set before The Light

THE NEW APARTMENT

The Hawk Window Seat 1:30pm

I know A Beautiful Girl

Who lives on fruit

& nutritional shakes

& runs Cross Country

for Her University

She has A Room Mate

sharing the same

abode

drinking the same

supplements

& running for Her Life

WORLD PRAYER

The Hawk Basement 11:22am

“World, You Can Save Your Self —

You Are Programmed To Survive —

Your Mountains Will Stand —

Your Oceans Will Thrive —

Your People Will Laugh

— Die Laughing —

World, You Are My Home”

INCEPTION

The Hawk Outpost 9:06am

The Glistening Light

Listens To Me

As If I Could Say A Prayer

For The Whole World

THE WORLD NOW

The Tomato-coloured Couch 6:11pm

The Bugs Know

I was that Young Woman

out on The Most Visible Rooftop

in The World

–

The Bugs Know

I had Something to say

They, The Bugs

know why I wore White

to match The Giant Canvas

The Shroud

–

The Bugs Know

why I dressed

in colours to match

My Painting —

My Message

of Our Continuing Existence

seen from above

–

The Bugs Know

why It all went Black

when I signed My Name

in 3-foot-high letters

and pressed-leather heels

to attend a party

in My Honour

with My Hair hanging loose

and My Mother’s Crystals

around My Neck

–

The Bugs Know

why nearly Everyone there

felt uncomfortable

–

The Bugs Know

why I am here

to make The World uncomfortable

to make It itch

with The Paradigm Shift

We’re in —

The Shift from White

to Black

from Innocence

to Old Age

–

The Bugs Know

I Am Still Alive

to make The World See Itself
